Last year I arrived in Yellowstone June 11 and in Tetons June 14. I was disappointed in the lack of wildlife I saw and in the crowded parking lots of geyser basins. Saw herd of bison between W. Yellowstone and Madison Jct., but 3 times through there we were stopped or crawled because traffic stalled. Saw 2 bears, but with traffic and rangers moving everybody along I couldn't get any pictures. Road construction also delayed traffic a couple places. Did get to drive on new road from Mammoth to Gardiner. If you could get out very early each morning and have more time to travel the roads at a more leisurely pace, you should enjoy it more. The arrowleaf balsomroot was blooming beautifully, and you might find a few early wildflowers. There's a chance of snow to close roads, but they should open quickly. Same problem to face in October. You may be able to hear and see the elk bugle yet in Oct. Those months may have a few less tourists than July, Aug., and Sept., but crowds just are overwhelming in the parks. Also, lodging is expensive...be sure to get some as soon as you can. Best in park but otherwise try West Yellowstone and Gardiner. Since I'm not so thrilled with Jackson, we stayed in Victor, Idaho, but had to drive over Teton Pass to get into Tetons. Hope you can go and enjoy yourself.
