I know there was uranium prospecting and mining in what is now Canyonlands National Park back before it was a national park. If you look carefully from various viewpoints at Island In the Sky, particularly the south end, you can see the remnant dirt air strips that were once used by light aircraft to get in and out of some of those mining areas.

I'm sure this is not new news to those of you who have been up there. I posted this for the benefit of those who haven't been (yet).

Stick, I love seeing your posts of this trip. The petroglyph shots bring back fond memories of forays in southern Utah in search of excellent rock art. My favorite to date is the Great Gallery in the Horseshoe Canyon area of Canyonlands, particularly the Holy Ghost panel. It is well worth the 30 mile drive on dirt off the highway, and 3 mile hike to the site. It was a surprise to find evidence of people having been able to drive to the area in the "old days". There appears to have been campsites and picnic areas down in the canyon. I haven't researched to see how the vehicles accessed the canyon bottom from the rim, but there was plenty of evidence of their having been down there.
