It is most likely a case of wishful thinking to believe that this battle could ever be won. Lake Trout are a Char and spawn in the lake, which makes it difficult shut off the hatching of the eggs. Even with reduced numbers, the fish have a life expectancy of 25 years, so netting will need to continue. Also, the first twenty years concentrated in the area of West Thumb, but now the fish have spread to other parts of the lake.
