The park was originally a sandpit used to pump sand and gravel. In the late 1960 s and early 1970 s a park grant allowed the city to fill in part of the sandpit. At that time new things were added to the park including ball fields and tennis courts. There are numerous recreational facilities and opportunities in the park including
picnic shelters, tennis courts, playground, sand volleyball courts, ball fields, frisbee golf, fishing, bocce ball, horseshoes, walking trail, much open space.
