Pibel Lake grew out of an attempt to create a ditch to irrigate land between Ericson and Spalding in the early 1900s. The lake was created by a dam on Clear Creek. It was named for William H. Pibel. Mr. Pibel, his wife and children came to the area from England in 1887. The lake was an early 20th century resort, with a hotel, store and post office. The State of Nebraska purchased the lake in 1930 and operated it until the Lower Loup NRD took over in 2012.
