Sucker came right up over the edge of the road from the right and dashed straight across the road in front of us. We were headed down the road from Swan Lake Flats to Mammoth at sunset, and believe me, I wasn't going any speed at all--but neither could I slam on the breaks, as we were on a curve with quite a drop. If he had made his dash about a half-second later, there wouldn't have been a thing I could have done--would have hit him dead-center. Just luck that he was a split-second ahead of us.
And then just to keep it interesting, a doe elk did the exact same thing about two minutes later. My nerves were pretty well shot by the time we pulled into Gardiner.......
