North Platte is a lot dryer than Grand Island. The humidity here just saps me. I know some comes just because we are close to the river and the natural weather patterns. But I think the irrigated corn contributes to the humidity, too. By the time we get to North Platte, I can breathe again. I can tell the difference at Cozad, which is on the 100th meridian. You wouldn't think just 100 miles would make that much difference, but it sure does... However, you are right that it isn't the very dry of the Colorado mountains.
My brother in law was telling me the sandy soil is perfect for the vines, too.
