beej,

I am not speaking from experience, but I know that lots of folks save money by using the Alaska Marine Highway System. One advantage is that you have your vehicle when you reach Alaska. You can do a roundtrip, or drive the Alaska Highway back down to the general Seattle area.

There are two primary lodging options aboard ship. You can book a cabin, or simply camp on deck. I have seen photos of numerous people "camping" on the deck. Some pitch tents. Some just stretch out on deck lounging chairs with the backs down. Lone Eagle Woman used the ferry system on her previous trip to Alaska. She should be somewhere up here right now on this year's trip.

I do know that you have to book reservations way ahead of time, particularly if you want one of the cabins. When Jane and I looked into this in 2012, a mere 2 months prior to our move, all the cabins on any departures convenient to our schedule were booked.

A couple we know well in Bozeman recommended we use the ferry system to explore west from the Anchorage area. They took it all the way out to one of the towns in the Aleutians, and raved about it.
