In 1992 I took BC Ferries to Prince Rupert and Alaskan Ferries from there to Haines. We hurried up stairs to the solarium to grab a couple of the deck lounge chairs that fold flat. We were allowed to go to our cars a couple of times during the day. Ferries don't dock for long like a cruise ship. They unload, load, and are off. You need to get off and wait until the next ferry comes if you want to explore. I have taken Princess Cruises. Highly recommend them. They leave from Vancouver Canada to Whittier Alaska. or vice versa. I liked going from Vancouver to Whittier. I rented a motorhome and stayed another week in Alaska. Wish I could send you a picture or two. Not sure how to do it.
