Along the the way you should stop off to see Casa Grande Ruins National Monument, a modest but interesting and important archaeological site, and then see the Heard Museum of American Indian Art and History, easy to find in the center of Phoenix. It has quite a spectacular collection of antiquities as well as historic and modern arts and artifacts (and a terrific shop) . There are often special exhibits and events like Indian pow-wows. It's among my favorite museums of all time since I discovered it when I was in grad school at ASU about a million years ago. Nice little restaurant for yummy lunch too.
