was at 75mm. I have a hard time estimating how far away the birds are, but they don't tolerate people coming much closer than I was this day. They might look fairly close while out in the field, but as soon as the car slows down, they either turn their backs and walk away or they fly. It seems their preferred distance is right at the end of the reach of my lens.
Some photographers spend $300-$500/night to stay in blinds on the sandbars of the river to see the birds come in at night or lift off in the morning. Their pictures are incredible... I am in awe. However, I am not paying that kind of money to stay outside at 20° F with no bathroom. Their picture are even more incredible when I think what they went through to get the shot.
