Axolotl Lakes are a cluster of glacial tarns in the hills east of Virginia City, west of Ennis, and south of the highway. It's a Special Management Area run by BLM, or at least it used to be. The folks from Virginia City stocked the lakes with trout for fishing and recreation, but the highest of the lakes apparently was not stocked, and continued to be habitat for axolotls, or neotenic salamanders...not your good-looking, multi-colored salamanders, but olive-drab colored critters with blue eyes. Unfortunately, trout love to predate on salamanders, so the steep grade up to the highest lake was the only thing that saved them.
Today a notice was posted that Grayling (Artic char) have been restocked into Grayling Creek, which were previously reared at Axolotl Lakes. Has anyone been to the lakes and observed how things are being managed there? I'm glad the Grayling are making a come-back, but I'm also concerned for the axolotls, homely as they are.
