A friend and I hope to catch a boat and explore the Inside Passage with camera and sketchbook. Last week the jeep and I did a shake-down cruise to Cody, taking the low-water route down the Yellowstone and up the Clark's Fork (driving time: 3 hours, 15 miles of gravel), home through Parkadise to check-out whether or not the Mammoth Terraces were really open. They were, and Hank H's drill hole is definitely pumping out the water. The trip to Cody was occasioned by a couple of shows at the Buffalo Bill, one an exhibit of Native American jewelry, the other a showing of John Mix Stanley's paintings, which will close in august. Stanley was out west early for several military surveys, cleaned up Richard Kern's illustrations from the last Fremont Expedition (after Fremont abandoned him), was the lead artist for the Northern Pacific RR survey in 1853, and towed a daguerrotype camera from Fort Snelling to the Pacific Northwest.
