I may be something of an extremist in this matter, but I see this young lady's behavior as tantamount to artistic terrorism. Her self-serving, incredibly egoistic acts have an impact on not only current park visitors, but countless future generations, who will not see these surfaces as they were, but thoughtlessly vandalized, and subsequently, mitigated by the NPS or their contractor.
I am thrilled that someone noticed her unconscionable peacock strutting behavior on social media, and blew the whistle on her. Looking at this case and the ridiculous behavior of those young Canadian idiots at Grand Prismatic earlier this year, I'm thinking we may need the creation of an ad hoc vigilante justice system that operates off society's radar, and punishes future offenders with more severe consequences. Here's an example: There are both state and national laws in effect that allow the confiscation of various personal items if they are found to have been used in commission of a crime, like vehicles, including aircraft and boats, used in drug running, or firearms used in poaching wildlife. Given that legal precedent, one can only imagine what a group of pro-park vigilantes might remove from those Grand Prismatic "walkers".
In the case of the incredibly misguided, and unbelievably narcissistic rock artist, I would add a zero or two to her community service sentence. I kind of like the concept of her scrubbing the chalk off all the rock faces that climbers frequent in a nice hot place like Joshua Tree National Park for a few years. If she ran out of rock in Joshua Tree, she could always spend the rest of her sentence at the nearby Marine base at 29 Palms, spit-shining boots!
