That mill is built right over the spring outlet in the bluff behind it. I guess I should have taken the photo. Sorry.
As for Alley Spring, it ranks 7th largest in the state. Big Spring,#1, also part of ONSR, is something else. It's like white water rapids coming out of the bluff.
In addition to the Show me State, another nickname for Mo. is the cave state. We got karst out the wahzoo, so we have lots of caves, springs, sinkholes, etc.
As for the rhyolite and other igneous rock in Mo., it's actually very old. They date most of it at 1.5B. It's only found in the eastern Ozarks, and quite sparse there. A geology professor once told me that the Ozarks rivaled the Himalayas. I've no idea how accurate that is.
