Thanks, Frank, glad you're enjoying the photos! I have a Tamron 150-600 that revolutionized by animal photography, and it works wonderfully with my also new Nikon D500. The Tamron has outstanding vibration control, and I've also sort of learned how to hold it reasonably steady in spite of its size and weight. The D500 can manage ISO's easily in the 3000 range (good for the indoor pow wow etc.), though I normally stay between 800-1250 depending on conditions.

This was ISO 1600, 1/800, F16, on a dreary winter day along the Madison.

Although I do use autofocus, I also usually manipulate especially speed as that's most germane when it comes to wildlife, and let the DOF do what it needs to. Relatively high ISO helps contribute to sharpness because both shutter speed and aperture can be optimized.
