I must admit that I remain confused about the Loons.

I've been going to the park since I was a child, and that was in 1958. I've lost track of how many times I've visited Yellowstone.

I've met GOSA members, wolf watchers, become friends with authors of books about the park, taken YA classes, explored back country thermal areas and enjoyed an annual 2 week visit to the park since 2010 when my work load lightened up.

I post on sites like Trip Advisor, YNet, the Yellowstone Chat Page and here. I've spent time researching material at the Heritage and Research Center in Gardiner. I enjoy logging into CamChat when I have time to watch the live video feed from Old Faithful.

Last September I finally got to meet Ballpark Frank and he joined our group for a hike to Sentinel Meadows one day. And I hiked to Allison Lake and Obsidian Pool in a blinding snow storm with geyser expert Rocco Paperiello.

While not a member of Facebook (by choice) I do read John Uhler's page and Pat Bohannan's hiking page.

This winter I read the compelling trip journal that Allison Silveira wrote about her visit to the park to meet many Loons in 2001. I wish I had met her and now that lake you named after her has a special meaning.

All that said, many years ago I tried to join the Loons. I sent two requests via the link on the Loon web page and never heard back.

So I got the idea that this was a closed and shrinking group that did not want any newbies to join in their secret club. Sorry if that sounds harsh but that's the way it felt to me back then.

I'd be interested to hear responses from "card carrying" Loons. What is this group about? Is it open to new members or closed? I will be at OF in June and would like to meet the gathered lunch group but only if I would not be intruding on a group of long-time friends in a reunion setting and feel like a total outsider.
