The first reported Lake Trout caught by fishermen was in 1994. Based on its size it had been in the lake five years. Successive reported catches indicated the true scope of the problem as Cutthroat Trout numbers declined. Based on sudden onset of the arrival of mature Lakers the strain
was determined to have illegally stocked from Lewis Lake.
Early efforts were ineffective in stemming the spread of the Lakers. Even in the very best of years, fisherman caught less than 10% of the trout that very harvested from the gill nets.
Birds and bears that feast on Cutthroats in the spawning creeks had no shot at Lakers which remain in deep water and spawn in the lake. Gill nets were the lone option. Even then the tide did not turn in favor of the Cutts until 2012 when Laker caught reached 300,000. The numbers
and size declined each year since.
As I mentioned before this has come at a staggering cost!
