Officially, the Bridger Foothills fire, when I first got a good look at it. Many Bozemanians, MSU faculty, students, staff and alumni were very, very relieved that the historic white-painted stone "M" survived. At first it was not apparent that it would, but the fire which started at the bottom of the next gully over - that red stuff at the bottom is fire retardant dropped by aerial tanker - and, in spite of an almost windless day, made its own heat-generated wind and quickly funneled upward - that red stuff at the top is flame.
