Glancing out my window this afternoon, I was surprised to see two large turkey vultures sitting on my lawn by the edge of the woods. I was even more surprised by what they were doing - they were spreading out their wings overhead like umbrellas, making them look even larger than they already did. I was wondering if it was some kind of courting behavior, but a closer look into the trees revealed the reason for whatever they were doing - there was a huge hawk sitting on a low branch right above them, and I guess the vultures were making themselves look as huge and imposing as possible in order to persuade the hawk to move on. I've seen turkey vultures around here plenty of times, but never sitting on my lawn and never behaving in such a way. I love seeing stuff like that. By the way, the local crows eventually noticed the hawk, too, and they began mobbing him until he finally got fed up and flew away.
