Buffalo Gal,

Ours is one of the few flags flying in our neighborhood, which is unusual. We live in close proximity to Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson (JBER). Our neighborhood is more than 50% active duty military, Air Force and Army. On most occasions, its a forest of flags around here, but not this weekend.

I think I know why, and it's a good thing. We are having very nice weather, which is not always the case around here this time of year. Over half our neighborhood cleared out on Thursday or Thursday night, heading for the great outdoors. Some have RVs. Some have boats. Some have tents. Others could be backpacking. Since most of our military neighbors have been deployed, many more than once, I like the idea that their flags are not flying because they left town well before the holiday; and are getting to enjoy a bit of that independence they have been defending.
