Geri,
I've heard a number of alleged statistics on Merrill Field from locals, but have not been able to verify them via web searches. One individual told me it was the busiest airport in the country, based on number of takeoffs and landings. Someone else said it ranked 6th or 7th in the country on some other parameter. I wouldn't be surprised if it is the largest small aircraft field on the planet, based on what I've seen.
I forgot to mention in my original post that we had a 4.9 quake around 11:00 p.m. Tuesday evening, that was centered down near Valdez. That is significant because the monster quake in 1964 was centered in that area.
This evening, we had a 5.0 quake further south from yesterday's temblor, and shallower (26 miles). It was about halfway between Talkneetna and Wasilla. We felt this one big time. At least it was quick, like 1 to 2 seconds.
The spooky part is trying to figure out what might be a "pre-shock" and what is an "aftershock".
It's a good thing the State Dept. of Emergency Services and many local governments conducted a major disaster drill back in March, on the 50th anniversary of the Good Friday Quake that was the second largest earthquake ever recorded on the planet (9.2). The drill was titled "Operation Alaska Shield". I'm glad they got some practice, just in case the real thing happens one of these days.
