The sheer amount of competition one faces in getting a spot requires you to think way, way, way in advance if there is even a small chance you might be going there during the prime tourist season. I too, have often made reservations the winter before, then cancelled after plans change and solidify. That's the ONLY way you have a chance of getting into the spots you want, when you want them. The only way around this is to do away with the reservation system totally, making everything in the park "first-come-first-served", which you and I know isn't going to happen.
I am fine with the cancellation fee. That's a fair enough and small enough penalty to pay for the change in plans that is the reality of life.
