I've posted this link before, but not this year, so for anyone who hasn't seen Explore.org's fantastic webcams at Katmai National Park's Brooks Falls, check out the link. Be sure to peruse the oh so active chat stream down below the cam images. This site is home to an incredible international community of relatively well-behaved bear fans.
July and September are the prime months.
Otis is a fan favorite. He tends to hang out on the far side of the river. Fans talk about how he has his "office" over there, where he frequently falls asleep (often while upright).
Some bears are known by their numbers, somewhat like many of Yellowstone's famous bears (e.g. 264). Others have been given names by their adoring fans. These include Holly, who adopted a 2 year old cub while nursing her own yearling cub, Backpack, Lefty, and Velcro (so named for the way this cub "stuck" to his mother).
A day or two ago, someone asked people to post where they are from, and I was amazed to see just how international the audience is. Lots of bear fans from Asia and Europe, besides Americans and Canadians from all over.
The bear traffic ebbs and flows big time. A few days ago, I noticed an incredible rush of salmon traffic attempting the falls. There were moments when there were 5 or 6 fish visible in the air simultaneously! There was not one bear on the cam. At busy times, you might see as many as 7 or 8 bears on the cam at once; and if there are that many on the cam, there might be another 5-8 off camera downriver a wee bit.
