In 2015 I drove from SE MO to northern CA Redwoods, up Oregon Coast, and back home in 20 days, feeling not too rushed. Three days driving to Billings MT except for touring Minuteman 2 Missile sites, next 3 days in Yellowstone, next day in traveling west toured Craters of the Moon, next day toured Newberry National Volcanic Monument, next day toured Crater Lake, next day stopped at Hiouchi Info Ctr before going through Jedediah Smith Redwoods S.P.and later Prairie Creek Redwood S.P. before heading back north to Crescent City. Day 11 up Oregon coast to Yachats, Day 12 up to Netarts, Day 13 rest of Oregon coast and Fort Clatsop to Kelso WA. Day 14 toured Mount St. Helens, Day 15 Mount Rainier, Day 16 three hour visit with friends in Spokane, Day 17 Back to Billings, Days 18-20 driving back home. You have almost all of Kentucky to drive through before where I started and you won't have much time to see anything along the way to get to CA, so flying out and renting the car in Vegas sounds very practical to me. You would have more time to see CA stuff and still have a car to do it at your own leisure time.
