I'm pretty sure I first met John at one of the overlooks in Hayden Valley, probably the Grizzly Overlook, but there were numerous times after that, along the road, and at dinner in Gardiner. The most memorable time was the evening we attended an interpretive program at the Canyon campground amphitheater. John, Patti, Roadie, and I just hung out together, conversing until the lights were turned off. I think we might have still been out there in relative darkness for a while, but probably not too long. You know how cold it gets at Canyon at night. John had such an insatiable curiosity, and an ability to examine controversial issues from many different perspectives. I was always struck by how solid the relationship between John and Patti was. I never heard a cross word uttered by either of them toward the other. This has to be so tortuous for Patti. I hope she has lots of family and close friends providing whatever support possible in this hour of need.

My best wishes to all Loons who are battling cancer in the present, or will be in the future. As a cancer survivor with two varieties of the disease, I feel guilty every time I see someone taken by this killer. I figure the lymphoma will be back. It's just a matter of when and where. For those of you afflicted or destined to be afflicted, know that sugar feeds cancer. If you want to enhance your chances of survival, go to great lengths to eliminate as much sugar as you can from your diet. Recognize that sugar creeps into our diets in insidious ways. Corn syrup is a key constituent in so many processed foods. Sure, there are certain types of cancer that may not be seriously impacted by sugar reduction, but many, possibly most, can be. It's like smoking cigarettes. Every time you light up, you are rolling the dice.

RIP John. You were a human value add to everyone that had the privilege of knowing you.
