TravelingBear,

Sensationalism in journalism is alive and well.

There are numerous indications in this piece that tell me it was written by someone totally unfamiliar with Yellowstone.

You don't spend "weeks at Yellowstone's Lava Creek Tuff". Lava Creek Tuff is exposed in numerous places outside the caldera where it was blown by the last caldera formation, including the summit of southern Mt. Everts, visible from Mammoth.

Then there is the 2011 quote from Bob Smith that conveniently omits the fact that the resurgent domes and other monitored areas had been deflating in a period of years prior to that seven year inflation. I find myself wondering if another period of deflation has been underway since 2011. We know that the magma chamber has a tendency to inflate and deflate cyclically over time.

Of course, you won't see me posting anything like this in a widely read forum like the Facebook Up Close and Personal group. Given the surge in visitation in recent years, I'm all in favor of scare propaganda that decreases the summer crowds.
