It struck me the same way back in 2002. The
idea of being required to kill every Lake Trout
went against my Trout Unlimited ethics. I tried
very hard not to catch one while fishing the lake.
The Cutthroat is held in very high regard in western states, perhaps in respect for being the
"original fish of the West." The Rainbow and Brown
came in as immigrants and the Lake Trout was the
late-arriving claim jumper.
The young Cutthroats up to seven inches were
easily ambushed in the lake and numbers dropped
rapidly in the spawning grounds of the Thorofare.
It's only a guess but I think the netting of Lake Trout over the last fifteen years cost the park
$500 thousand dollars.
Hopefully the Park succeeds in the effort, but
I have my long term doubts.
