In 1995, I rode the Thorofare with a group from the (then) Yellowstone Institute. It was a small group, and our youngest participant was 13. His father came along, too. The boy handled himself very well, never had any problems. but he may have grown up with horses.
I probably was the least familiar with animals, and I got a rather locoed mare because she was small, and we both had initials for names. Somehow, she was the only animal which kept her shoes on...the rest left a trail of jingling iron from Pacific Creek to the Park Point pickup. We fought our way for five days south to north, and she wore a sore by her mouth fighting the bit. She was so disturbed that it took me several days to realize she never came back to camp in the morning in the same tack I staked her out in the night before. Had no idea what she was up to until the head wrangler handed me her picket rope which was so tied in knots I like to couldn't get it straightened out.
Anyway, Happy Trails to youse guys!
