Weather is one reason. Secondly, taking the Kaibab Trail down and the Bright Angel up is considerably shorter. I think I know my limitations and for a first time hike, with the elevation gain and loss, this seems to make more sense.
So in my ideal world, starting the hike at the south rim, where the temperature would be 50-60 degrees, is perfect. The temperature at the bottom of the canyon can be twenty degrees warmer than the rim.
I think you can easily make it down to Phantom Ranch in 3-4 hours. Rest there for a bit and leaving plenty of time for the hard part coming back up for about 9.5 miles.
One more thing is the logistics of starting and ending on the south rim are more favorable than taking a park bus on a 4 hour ride to the north rim to start the hike or shuttling cars.
