Bonnie,

You caught something that very few of us have ever witnessed! Speaking for myself, I can say I have never caught a bison birth live. I've only seen it in videos.

I always figured it would be "easy", until Bob Landis commenced his effort to film what you photographed, back in the early to mid-2000's. I remember how those of us that hung out on the Northern Range regularly were rooting for Bob. We would see him following bison herds around, stealthily approaching females in hopes of capturing what you photographed. I don't know how long it took Bob to get an acceptable result, but it seems like he was at it for quite some time.

I'm curious about just how serendipitous this moment was. Were you on the roadside, or had you walked a ways out into the meadow? Were you seeing signals from the prospective mom that tipped you off to concentrate on her? How long were you waiting before the special event took place?

We humans joke around occasionally about what a rude awakening it is for us to be born (the old joke about being held up by the legs and slapped on the butt); but that 3 foot drop onto hard ground has to be more than a little bit jarring. Bison are tough critters.

Thanks a bunch for sharing these precious images!
