No, I wouldn't call an Indian any derogatory name. I live near a reservation and have several full blood friends. I have Cherokee in me but can't get an Indian card because my ancestors were enrolled in an older (more reliable) roll than the one they are currently using. My daughter works at an Indian casino. No race in America has been more oppressed than the Native American. At one time it was US policy to kill them without provocation. Of all the injustices (past and present), a sports team name would rank near the bottom IMO.
