Now last year and this year have gone up thru the Inside Passage on the Alaska State Ferries which I absolutely love. Personally I have not gone on a cruise and probably never will! I am personally biased against the cruise ships. But as when I go north from Washington on the ferries, I just go and take my time with stopping and getting off in various places with also avoiding the tourist trap places in which the cruise ships go to it seems. I really love both Wrangell and Haines, Alaska in which the cruise ships usually do not go to. Have also gone over to Gustavus and Glacier Bay which is fabulous. Last year and this year have also taken the Trans Gulf Ferry that runs from Juneau to Whittier and then to Homer, nice incredible views of the St. Elias Mountains. I like the slowly pace with taking the ferry to some town, then getting off and staying some days and really seeing things. The cruise ships seem to stop in certain towns and then those towns have become such Tourist Traps it seems with catering to the cruise ships. Plus the route that the ferry takes up along the B.C. coast is somewhat different then the cruise ships. There are some channels like the Princess Royal Channel and the Grenville Channel that is absolutely stunning spectacular in which the cruise ships do not pass thru.

The Alaska State Ferries do come with cabins. But as for myself, I usually go back to the Solarium and get some lounge chair where I spread out the sleeping bag. Love the ferries for there is always all these other fellow adventurers around you. It is quite inexpensive in being a simple walk-on but if you are going with a car, it can be quite expensive it seems.

Now if you indeed go by the Alaska State Highway System, and you want a cabin, then book way early for they do fill up fast it seems.

Just my opinion. Wishing You the Best!
