I am so glad I asked here instead of reading the online reviews.

We went to The Monuments Men, and I enjoyed it VERY much. I
thought, for the most part, it was a VERY good movie. The online
critics gave it a C- and said to pass. I am glad I didn't. I would
have given it at LEAST a B+, possibly an A-, and I'm not even sure
what I would have downgraded it for.

I missed some of the connections at the beginning.. how the
characters knew each other, and the reason each was chosen for the
mission... but by the time they split up and each took their own
area with or without a partner, I was hooked.

I loved how they used their resources to figure out the locations
of the artwork. I enjoyed the little bits of human interest.. like
the music being played over the loudspeaker at Christmas.

I was horrified by a couple things... the gold teeth in the
barrel.. HOW many people were killed to get that many gold teeth???
Shudder. I was horrified by the German officer at the end, when he
had asked the George Clooney if he was a Jew... and when George
Clooney said "No," he replied, "Then you should thank me."
Shudder. I can't even imagine the hatred that would move one
people to do that to another people.

I thought of the soldiers returning from today's war with PTSD. I
wondered why we didn't hear more of it with soldiers returning from
WWII... maybe they just didn't use the term. Alcoholism did seem
pretty common with some.

This was my favorite quote from the movie: "You can wipe out an
entire generation, you can burn their homes to the ground and
somehow they'll still find their way back. But if you destroy their
history, you destroy their achievements and it's as if they never
existed. That's what Hitler wants and that's exactly what we are
fighting for."

Stokes was asked near the end of the movie: Was it worth it? Was
the mission worth it? You lost 2 men. 2 lives lost. Was all the
artwork in Europe worth the lives of 2 men?

I am leaning on the side of "yes." Which side are you on?
