The Lewis and Clark Expedition set up camp in the area on July 30, 1804 and held council with the Oto and Missouri Indians on August 3, 1804. That powwow gave the locale its name of "Council Bluffs." Clark later recommended the site for the location of a fort. Established by the Yellowstone Expedition of 1810 on that recommendation, it became the first military post west of the Missouri River. Located at Fort Calhoun, the fort was important to the early fur trade, river traffic and Indian relations. Much of the historic outpost has been reconstructed. The Visitor Center is open 10:00 - 5:00 daily, from Memorial Day through Labor Day. SHP grounds are open 8:00 - 7:00 daily.
