Hoot,
There are a host of reasons for all that open space between Boulder and Denver. Let's expand that to a triangle, with Golden anchoring the third point on the triangle.
1.) Many moon ago, plutonium triggers for A-bombs were manufactured at Rocky Flats, kind of right in the middle of the triangle. It became a SuperFund clean-up site, and some of it is now county or state park land.
2.) Fierce winds blow across Hwy 93 between Boulder and Golden. Anything not tied down winds up heading toward Missouri!
3.) There are a number of old coal mines out near the old town of Marshall. Several caught fire many moon ago, and are still burning to this day. Driving around there on a cold winter day reveals the location of many of the vents.
4.) Boulder County and Jefferson County have been fairly aggressive about creating "green space", AKA "open space".
5.) There is quite a philosophical and political divide between the Denver area and "The People's Republic of Boulder". An abundance of green space may function as a de facto DMZ.
