I don't think the Kendrick ranch would have qualified as "one of the largest in the country" though it was large...Senator Kendrick died about 1930, the ranch hung together until around 1984, when it was split up and sold off piecemeal. Kendrick had lucked out not losing too many cattle in the bad winter of 1886, so he was in a position to buy up his less fortunate neighbors, plus he did have a good eye for environmental sustainability. He left a legacy of interesting ranch architecture on the outlying ranch units, as well as a historic mansion, "Trail's End" in Sheridan, gifted to State Parks and Cultural Resources. So maybe some of this is backstory for the Kevin Costner series?
