The illegal stocking of Lake Trout, which
undoubtedly happened in the West Thumb area, instantly impacted the Cutthroat population. While the Laker population thrived, having no predators, the Cutts easily became the favored food source. The Lakers thrived in the colder lake water as they fed year round. In 2001, the Park counter-attacked by making it illegal for fishermen to return a Lake Trout to the water. However, the real balance shifted with the gill-net operations. The weighted nets stretched along the lake bottom in 50-80 feet of water, really turned the tide.
Some will suggest that preferring one trout over another is being too selective, but the larger issue is righting a wrong in the ecosystem.
